2. Calculate Groove Volume

Determine the volume of the groove by multiplying its width (W) by its depth (D). This gives you the space available for the O-ring to fit into.

3. Determine O-ring Cross-Sectional Area

Measure the cross-sectional diameter (CSD) of the O-ring. This is the diameter of the O-ring when viewed from the side.

4. Calculate O-ring Volume

Using the formula for the volume of a cylinder (π × (CSD/2)^2 × Length of the O-ring), calculate the volume of the O-ring. This gives you the amount of space the O-ring occupies.

5. Compute Gland Fill Percentage

Divide the volume of the O-ring by the volume of the groove, then multiply by 100 to get the gland fill percentage. This tells you how much of the groove space is filled by the O-ring.

6. Interpret and Adjust

Aim for a gland fill percentage between 75% to 85% for most applications. If the gland fill is too low, consider a larger O-ring or adjusting the groove dimensions. If it's too high, opt for a smaller O-ring or groove adjustments.
